Justice Yahya Afridi has been appointed as the 30th Chief Justice of Pakistan.

Islamabad (Pakistan), October 23: President Asif Ali Zardari has appointed Justice Yahya Afridi as the 30th Chief Justice of Pakistan, as reported by ARY News. Justice Afridi, who has been serving as a Supreme Court Justice since 2018, is scheduled to take the oath of office on October 26, 2024. This appointment follows his nomination by a 12-member special parliamentary committee on Tuesday.

The committee made this nomination under the 26th Constitutional Amendment, in accordance with Articles 175A(3), 177, and 179 of the Constitution. Justice Afridi's new role comes in the wake of Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa's retirement, and the appointment was approved by President Zardari based on a summary recommended by the parliamentary committee and advised by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Justice Afridi began his legal career as an advocate of the high court in 1990 and became an advocate of the Supreme Court in 2004. He held positions as Assistant Advocate General for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and as Federal Counsel for the government of Pakistan.

His judicial career began when he was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Peshawar High Court in 2010, and he was confirmed as a permanent Judge on March 15, 2012. Notably, he became the first judge from the Federally Administered Tribal Area (FATA) to serve as Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court, taking his oath on December 30, 2016, before being elevated to the Supreme Court of Pakistan on June 28, 2018.
